In May of 2024, SOFSA Director Maura Ackerman wrote directly to Chancellor Kent Syverud to express SOFSA’s support of Syracuse University’s food service, library and facilities workers, who have been organizing to improve their working conditions and pay through union incorporation. Earlier this year, with the support of SEIU Local 200United, a regional union made up of service workers across different industries, over 1000 of these workers voted to unionize

As these workers continue to advocate for themselves, SOFSA will stand with them, in support of a more just food system where all workers and eaters are honored and cared for.

“Collectively, the SOFSA network calls on Syracuse University to negotiate fairly with the facilities workers in contract negotiations and to recognize the immense value they bring to the institution. These workers deserve to be treated with the respect and appreciation and robust compensation they have rightfully earned through their tireless efforts. The university should uplift these critical members of our community rather than holding them back by not meeting their demands” writes Director Maura Ackerman.
